Before You Apply

Admission Requirements 

There are specific requirements that you need to meet for a successful undergraduate admission in NTU. The Admission Requirements would depend on which category you belong to (What is my Application Category?). For Category D applicants, there are three types of requirements that you must fulfil:

If you are shortlisted, you may be required to take our entrance examination before a final decision on admission is made.

General admission requirements

As an international applicant, you must have completed at least 12 years of general education or will be taking Year 12 national examinations in the year of application in order to be considered for admission. Submission of IELTS, TOEFL and SAT1 scores are optional except for students with PRC Gao Kao qualification (i.e. students who will be taking Gao Kao in June 2010 and those who have already taken Gao Kao). Only scores obtained in the 3 years leading up to the application deadline will be considered.

The more common international qualifications we consider for admission are shown below. Applicants with other equivalent qualifications from countries that are not listed here may also apply.

Footnotes:

  1. E1119 English certificate is compulsory if you are applying for non-Engineering/non-Science programmes except Chinese programme.
  2. 'A' level applicants sitting for 2010 June A Level exams should fax or email us their actual A Level results within 3 days after the release of their actual results in August 2010. No provisional offer will be given. A level applicants must have taken at least 3 A Level subjects in a single sitting.
  3. Students with PRC Gao Kao qualification have to submit any of the following: IELTS or TOEL or SAT 1 in addition to their school result or Gao Kao result (for those who have taken Gao Kao). Only scores obtained the 3 years leading up to the application deadline will be considered.
  4. IB diploma applicants sitting for 2010 IB diploma exams should fax or email us their actual IB results within 3 days after the release of their actual IB results. Also, authorise NTU to obtain your results online at IBO website.
  5. Exemptions to taking the entrance examination.
  • International students with Malaysia STPM, Malaysia UEC, India Standard 12, 'A' level (AQA, Brunei, Cambridge, Edexcel, Hong Kong, London, Maldives, Sri Lanka) Certificate, Mauritius HSC , PRC National College Entrance Exam (NCEE) or 高考and IB qualifications are not required to take the entrance examinations.
  • Applicants who have won gold, silver or bronze medals in international competitions such as International Olympiads Competition will be exempted from the examinations.

Applicants from PRC may apply directly to NTU by submitting their application online at NTU admissions website or approach the following companies for admission enquires and applications to NTU undergraduate programmes.

In addition, candidates are required to submit the following five (5) submission items not more than 1 week after the closing date of application for admission. (preferably together with the supporting documents for admission)

Part 1 – Compulsory Assignments

  • A portfolio or demo reel of personal artwork, including projects developed in secondary education. The portfolio should demonstrate general artistic proficiency plus ability in the desired area of BFA expertise (i.e. animation, photography, design, etc)
  • A short written composition in English of no more than 400 words explaining why you are uniquely qualified to enter a specific BFA programme.

Part 2 – To submit three (3) pieces from an assigned set of four designs that will demonstrate your abilities in the areas of:

  • Conceptual and Visual Problem Solving. Using visual elements and symbols, create a composition that visually describes a verbal metaphor.
  • Design Ability. Using a set of defined elements - spatial, conceptual structural, and possible even auditory stimuli, design a 3D form or spatial environment that satisfies the stated design brief.
  • Narrative and Storytelling - using a set of images write a story in a maximum of 3 paragraphs.
  • Drawing and Visualization - create a drawing of a specific object, demonstrating your skill in handling pencil or pen on paper.

These assignments are to be completed in a specific material and size requirement .  The specific assignments will be available on the NTU School of Art, Design & Media website.

All portfolio submissions must arrive in physical form on CD-ROM, DVD or in original or duplicated work.  All work must be hand delivered, or sent by courier or by standard mail.  No work will be accepted if sent by email attachment.

Entrance Examination

Shortlisted Category D applicants with the following qualifications (or equivalent qualifications as deemed fit by the university) may be required to sit for an NTU entrance examination before a final decision on admission can be made.

  • Indonesia - SMA UAN/Australia NSW UAI/Western Australia TER
  • Malaysia - South Australia Matriculation/Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Myanmar - Higher School Certificate
  • Thailand - Mathayom 6
  • Vietnam - High School Graduation Certificate

Category D applicants with Malaysia STPM, Malaysia UEC, India Standard 12, 'A' level (AQA, Brunei, Cambridge, Edexcel, Hong Kong, London, Maldives, Sri Lanka) Certificate, Mauritius HSC, PRC National College Entrance Exam (NCEE) or 高考 & IB qualifications are not required to take the entrance examinations.

Applicants who have won gold, silver or bronze medals in international competitions such as International Science Olympiad Competitions will be exempted from the examinations.
