The scholarship was set up by Mr Wang Hairong. It is open to all current matriculated undergraduate students of Nanyang Technological University regardless of course and year of study.
The SCCCI has a membership network of about 120 trade associations and 4,000 corporate entities including large financial and business organisations, multinational corporations, government-linked companies, small and medium enterprises from a wide spectrum of trades and industries. These members together provide vast resources and opportunities which enable the SCCCI to develop an influential global Chinese business network for business, education, culture and community development. In return, they share a strong sense of pride and identity together and benefit immensely from the SCCCI’s membership services, facilities and activities.
The same year he graduated from Nanyang University with a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) in 1974, Mr Tan started an industrial hardware business before expanding to cater to the international oil and gas and petrochemical industries. The founder and former Executive Chairman of KS Energy Services Limited, Mr Tan oversaw the firm's business strategies and directions, leading to its listing on the SGX-SESDAQ in 1999 and the SGX Mainboard in 2002. Apart from his business interests, Mr Tan is an active grassroots figure. He is the Patron of the Hong Kah North Citizens' Consultative Committee and Member of the Fuhua Primary School Advisory Committee. Showing concern for the development of his alma mater, he readily stepped forward and established the Tan Guk Eng Scholarship to benefit the students from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.

- Singapore Trade, May 22, 1969 Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw, was Chairman and Founder of the Shaw Organisation (Singapore).
He passed away on 2nd March 1985 at the age of 88 .He is survived by his wife Peggy (23 June 1916-, Jiangsu) and sons Vee King and Vee Foong and daughters Doris, Vivian, Nora and Sylvia. Born in 1901 in the district of Zhenhai, Zhejiang, China, Tan Sri Dr Shaw was the third child in a family of seven children. As he once said of his family's economic status: 'We were not rich, but we were well to do'. He was named 'Runme' by his father as it meant 'kindness'. This was a trait which he lived up to in a lifetime of social service and philathropic acts. As a boy, Tan Sri Dr Shaw went to a traditional school in Shanghai where he studied Confucian classics and classical chinese literature. Soon after completing his secondary school, Tan Sri Dr Shaw started as a sales manager in his father's textile import and export company in Shanghai.
But his real interest lay in films. He joined his elder brother, Runde, who was then producing silent films as distribution manager. In 1924, Tan Sri Dr Shaw arrived by steamer to Singapore to establish a film and theatre business. Overcoming incredible odds and through sheer hard work, Tan Sri Dr Shaw and his brother, Sir Run Run Shaw, began to build their film business one brick at a time. By the post war years, their business had spread throughout Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, operating a chain of more than 160 cinemas as well as various commercial and residential property developments. In addition, the Shaw brothers also operated amusement parks and film production studios in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Over the years, Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw chaired and served on numerous corporate boards outside of his own Shaw Organisation Group of Companies. He served on the Board of Singapore Turf Club, Fraser and Neave Ltd, Bank of Singapore, Shangri-la Hotel Ltd, Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation, Bukit Timah Saddle Club, Alliance Francaise, National St John's Council, National Kidney Foundation, Singapore Tourist Promotion Board, National Safety First Council, Singapore Association of Mental Health, Singapore National Heart Association, Singpoare National Olympic Council, Society for Aid to the Paralysed, Metropolitan YMCA, Young Men's Christian Association of Singapore and the Chinese Swimming Club. For his long service as Chairman of the Tourist Promotion Board, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the President of the Republic of Singapore.
Besides his business interests, Tan Sri Dr Runme was also a famous philanthropist. In 1957, he instituted the Shaw Foundation, which is a fund for charitable purposes in Singapore. Since its inception, the foundation has donated over US$150 million to various associations, schools and institutions. As Chairman of the Turf Club for 19 years, he turned the 'sport of kings' into a major source of funds for cardiac, cancer, liver and pediatric medical research, homes and orphanages, hospitals and associations for the disabled. For his lifetime of achievements, Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw was bestowed with numerous decorations and honours including the title of Panglima Mangku Negara by the Yang di Pertuan Agong of Malaysia; the titles of Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang and Dato Kurnia Perkasa by the Sultan of Pahang; Knight of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy, Order of the Holy Sepulchre by His Holiness Pope Paul VI, Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the Italian President and Officier de la Legion d' Honneur by the French Government.
He was an Associate Knight Officer of St John and the Honorary Member of the Academy of Medicine and the Diabetic Society of Singapore. He was also awarded a Doctor of Letters by the National University of Singapore and the Dag Hammarskjold award for his contribution towards the arts.
Tan Sri Dr Tan Chin Tuan Scholarship [back to top]Tan Sri (Dr) Tan Chin Tuan, well-known for building the OCBC Group into a financial powerhouse in the 1950s to 1980s, was once described by the National Geographic magazine as the “emperor of finance”.
The spectacular growth of the companies under his stewardship attests to this accolade. From when he became director to the year* he retired from each company, shareholders’ funds appreciated considerably in value: Raffles Hotel – 303 per cent ($3.7 million in 1969); Robinsons – 1,298 per cent ($56 million in 1976*); Overseas Assurance Corporation – 2,709 per cent ($39 million in 1981*); OCBC – 7,702 per cent ($1208 million in 1983*); Fraser and Neave – 2,640 per cent ($290 million in 1983*); Asia Pacific Breweries – 1,632 per cent ( $194 million in 1983*); Wearne Brothers Ltd – 389 per cent ($244 million in 1983*); Straits Trading – 2,997 per cent ($692 million in 1992*); and Great Eastern Life – 6,695 per cent ($226 million in 1992*).
For OCBC, 1000 shares bought in 1947 grew to 43,389 shares in 1983* while 1000 shares in GE acquired in 1956 increased to 393,846 shares in 1992*. A 1000-share holding in Straits in 1956 became 330,000 shares in 1992*. At APB, 1000 shares in 1951 became 16,875 shares in 1983* while 1000 F&N shares held from 1947 increased to 15,556 shares in 1983*. A 1000-share stake in WBL from 1957 became 8,438 shares in 1983*. A 1000-share holding in Raffles Hotel had doubled by 1978* while the same amount of shares in Robinson rose to 30,000 in 1976*.
Prior to Singapore’s independence, Tan Sri was appointed Deputy President of the Legislative Council, the highest position held by a British subject of Chinese descent. He often took the colonial rulers to task for their arbitrary treatment of the Asians in Singapore, declaring that “in a democratic state, there can only be one law for those who govern and those who are governed.”
In 1976, he established the Tan Foundation to promote his philanthropic causes.
Having witnessed several historic events in the last century, Tan Sri, at the age of 96 in 2003, continues to face the future with his hall-mark feisty enthusiasm.

Tan Teo Scholarship [back to top]The Tan Teo Scholarship is established from the funds of the Tan Teo Charitable Foundation for deserving students with outstanding academic records. This is made possible by NTU alumni Mr Tan Chade Meng and his wife who benefited from an education in NTU and wanted to give the gift of opportunity to current and future students.
2 scholarships will be offered for the academic year 2007-08, with 1 scholarship opened to undergraduate NTU student in the School of Computer Engineering only. The other scholarship shall be opened to undergraduate NTU student in any discipline. Applicants shall be considered based on their academic and ECA performance. Those who demonstrate strong creativity and a passionate concern for humanity will be strongly favored.
Tanlaw Foundation Scholarship [back to top]The Tanlaw Foundation Scholarship was established at NTU in 2008 with a gift from the Tanlaw Foundation, a charitable trust supporting education and the handicapped. Each year, one scholarship valued at $8,000 is awarded to an undergraduate at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information.
The Regency Steel Asia Pte Ltd Fund [back to top]In May 2008, one of Asia’s largest steel distributors, Regency Steel Asia Pte Ltd established The Regency Steel Asia Pte Ltd Fund at NTU. The fund supports and advances research in steel, and provide for scholarships and bursaries for outstanding and needy students from the College of Engineering and Nanyang Business School.
