General Admission Requirements

Applicants must have Bachelor's degree with minimum 2nd class honours upper or *Honours (Distinction) and the ability to pursue research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study. For details of admission requirements for individual programme, please refer to the respective school's webpage.  

Currently, the University is taking in more students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree.

*All NTU first degree students graduating from January 2018 onwards will be awarded degrees according to the new classfication nomenclature, regardless of their intake year. Please click on the link (Point 5) below for the new nomenclature:- 


Required Test Scores
[Below are general criteria. Please refer to the School’s website for specific requirements for the respective programme.]

A valid GRE/GMAT score is required for applicants who are not graduates of the Autonomous Universities in Singapore, unless there is specific requirement stated in the School's website for the respective programme. Test dates must be within 5 years or less from the date of your application.

Applicants from India may use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering [GATE] score of at least 90th percentile in place of GRE. Test date must be within 3 years or less from the date of your application. 

For applicants whose native language is not English, a good TOEFL  score is required. Test dates must be within 2 years or less from the date of your application. IELTS may be submitted in place of TOEFL.

A photocopy of the GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS test scores should be attached to the application. Official original test scores are not required at the application stage.


Candidature Periods

Qualifying Examination / Confirmation Exercise

All successful applicants are admitted as Research Students in the first instance with the students expected to be confirmed as PhD candidates or Master candidates after a confirmation exercise. Applicants with only a Bachelor’s degree can also be admitted as Research Students in the first instance with the students expected to be confirmed as a PhD candidate.

Candidates who are admitted will have to pass a Qualifying Examination/Confirmation Exercise within a specific period of time. As each school has its own specific requirements and timeline, please check with the Schools for details.

The normal timeline for confirmation of candidature is 1 year for Masters, 1.5 years for full-time PhD and up to 2 years for part-time PhD from the commencement of candidature.
