General Admission Requirements 

Eligibility

Applicants must have Bachelor's degree with minimum 2nd class honours upper and the ability to pursue research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study.

All successful applicants are admitted as Research Students in the first instance with the students expected to be confirmed as PhD candidates or Master candidates after a confirmation exercise.  Applicants with only a Bachelor’s degree can also be admitted as Research Students in the first instance with the students expected to be confirmed as a PhD candidate.

Currently, the University is taking in more students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree.

Candidates who are admitted will have to undergo a Qualifying Examination as well as a Confirmation Exercise. The courses, Qualifying Examination and Confirmation exercise must be completed within a specific period of time. As each school has their own specific requirements and timeline, please check with the schools for details.   The timeline for the confirmation of your candidature is 1 year for Masters and 2 years for PhD after commencement of your candidature.

For higher degrees by research, candidates may be admitted as full-time or part-time students. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature for both full-time and part-time are as follows:

Required Test Scores

Local applicants: A GMAT or GRE score is required if you are applying for the Ph.D. programmes of the Business, Accountancy, Economics, Psychology and Sociology disciplines.

Applicants applying for the School of Communication and Information must submit valid GRE scores (except for graduates from NTU/NUS).

International applicants: A good GRE test score is required if you are applying for the Engineering, Communication & Information Studies, Economics, Psychology, Sociology and science disciplines. Applicants from India may use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering [GATE] score of at least 90% in place of GRE.

A GMAT score or GRE score is required if you are applying for the Business and Accountancy disciplines.

You need to attach a photocopy of the GRE test scores to the application. Official ETS test scores are not required when you are sending in the application.

For applicants whose mother tongue is not English, a good TOEFL score is required. Test dates must be within 2 years or less from the date of your application. IELTS can also be used in place of TOEFL.
