NTU Academic Unit System

NTU's courses are assigned credits based on the Academic Unit System. For a typical one-semester course, the number of academic units is calculated as follows:
a) One (1) hour of lecture / tutorial per week         : 1 AU
b) Three (3) hours laboratory / fieldwork per week : 1 AU

More information on our Academic Unit System can be viewed here

Workload per semester

Exchange students are allowed to take a maximum of 20 AUs per semester (subjected to home university and NTU's approval - which translates to approximately 4 - 5 courses, based on 4 AUs per course).

NTU does not stipulate the minimum number of AUs a student must take as long as he/she is able to meet the requirements for his/her academic progression back home.

Course Selections

Exchange students should select at least ten (10) undergraduate &/or postgraduate courses at the application stage for approval. This is to ensure that you have an adequate number of approved courses prior to arrival in NTU.

If you do not have enough approved courses, or choose to apply for new course(s) to read after your arrival in NTU, course approval shall be subjected to vacancies available and pre-requisites met. It shall not be guaranteed that you will be offered the course(s) and your course registration will be delayed.

Exchange students are strongly encouraged not to deviate from the list of approved courses. Please select courses which are deemed necessary by your home university for yiour academic progression.

Grading System

NTU uses the Grade Point Average (GPA) system in awarding grades:
