Admission Requirements

Category A Applicants 

General Requirements

You are offering the Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'A' level Examination in the English medium and must have obtained all of the following:

  • At least two passes in subjects at H2 level and attempted General Paper (GP) or Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) in the same sitting;
  • Meet one of the following Mother Tongue (MT) requirement:
    • A minimum of D7 in Higher MTL taken at 'O' level
    • A minimum of 'S' grade in H1 MTL or H2 MTLL taken at 'A' level

A Mother Tongue subject (Chinese/Malay/Tamil) taken at a separate sitting of the GCE 'A' level examination is acceptable for purpose of admission.  H1 non-Tamil Indian Language (Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu) or H1 Foreign Language (French, German, Japanese) may be taken in lieu of MTL.

Candidates who do not satisfy the MT requirement may still submit an application for admission.  If selected, he/she will be admitted on a provisional basis.  During their course of study, they will be required to meet the minimum MT requirement before they are allowed to graduate. And,

The qualifications listed above are the minimum requirements for you to be considered for admission to our undergraduate programmes. It should be appreciated that admission is highly competitive and is based on merit, therefore the possession of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Computation of University Score

In computing the University Score, the University will take into consideration the following:

  • The best three H2 and one H1 content-based subjects, of which one must be a contrasting subject
  • GP or KI (taken in the same sitting as the H2 subjects)
  • Project Work (PW)

A H1 subject will be counted as half of a H2 in terms of points computation.   GP and PW are considered as H1 subjects.

MTL may be included in the computation of the University Score.  The better of the two scores (i.e. with and without MTL) will be the University Score of the candidate.

H3 programmes will not be considered in the computation of the University Score.  Candidates who have taken H3 programmes may be considered for admission under Non-Academic Achievements.

If your subject combination is beyond the norm, selection for admission will be based on the following:

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) bonus point scheme

Students who have done well in their H1 MTL or H2 MTLL at the GCE 'A' level examination are eligible for MT bonus points for the following programmes in the University:

The following MT bonus points will be awarded:

  1. Two bonus points for applicants who have passed (at least an E grade) H2 MTLL;
  2. One bonus point for applicants who obtained an A grade in H1 MTL;
  3. One bonus point for applicants who obtained at least a B grade in H1 General Studies in Chinese; and
  4. Students offering any combinations of MT-related subjects are allowed to accumulate the MT bonus points allocated for each subject, including a combination of H1 MTL and H2 MTLL.
  5. The cap on bonus points for MT will be three. 

If you do not meet the MTL requirements

If you are an English and non-English medium applicant and do not satisfy the Mother Tongue subject requirements, you may still submit an application for admission. If selected, you will be admitted to NTU on a provisional basis. However, before you are allowed to graduate, you are required to meet the requisite minimum Mother Tongue subject requirements.

Special Subject Requirements

In addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, you also need to make sure you fulfil the subject prerequisites of the degree programmes that you wish to apply.  Look up and read the subject-specific requirements.

Business & Accountancy

Art, Design & Media

'O' level or equivalent pass in Mathematics.  

In addition, candidates are required to submit the following five (5) submission items.

Part 1 – These are compulsory assignments to fulfil.

  • A portfolio or demo reel of personal artwork, including projects developed in secondary education. The portfolio should demonstrate general artistic proficiency plus ability in the desired area of BFA expertise (i.e. animation, photography, design, etc)
  • A short written composition in English of no more than 400 words explaining why you are uniquely qualified to enter a specific BFA programme.

Part 2 – Please submit three (3) pieces from an assigned set of four designs that will demonstrate your abilities in the areas of:

  • Conceptual and Visual Problem Solving. Using visual elements and symbols, create a composition that visually describes a verbal metaphor.
  • Design Ability. Using a set of defined elements - spatial, conceptual structural, and possible even auditory stimuli, design a 3D form or spatial environment that satisfies the stated design brief.
  • Narrative and Storytelling - using a set of images write a story in a maximum of 3 paragraphs.
  • Drawing and Visualization - create a drawing of a specific object, demonstrating your skill in handling pencil or pen on paper.

These assignments are to be completed in a specific material and size requirement.  The specific assignments will be available on the NTU School of Art, Design & Media website. 

All portfolio submissions must arrive in physical form on CD-ROM, DVD or in original or duplicated work.  All work must be hand delivered, or sent by courier or by standard mail.  No work will be accepted if sent by email attachment.

Communication Studies

You need a good pass with at least B or better in General Paper or Knowledge Inquiry (KI) in order to be considered.
